It’s been nearly a month since the last post, and yes—I’m still working on the foundation.
At this point, I’ve worked my way around nearly the entire house foundation by hand, with only about 20 feet left to go. I had planned to rent a mini excavator, but when I went to pick it up, one of its hydraulic lines had blown the day before. So, it wasn’t available.
Most of this work has happened in 100-plus-degree heat, and it has been every bit as painful and difficult as you’d expect. Thankfully, the weather has finally broken, and cooler days are ahead. Will I make my October deadline to finish? Probably not.
We’re also scheduled to become grandparents in just a few days, so the rest of September will be spent figuring out how to become grandparents. The 16-year-old in my head still isn’t quite sure how to process it, but we’ll figure it out eventually. Sheri, on the other hand, is very excited.
Okay, enough personal stuff.
Back to the house: I did manage to reduce Dirt Everest—the mountain of dirt that has been sitting behind the shop since construction began in June 2024. The rough grading is mostly done, but there is still plenty of dirt left to spread around. I’ll likely take another stab at that project in the spring.
I think that’s about it for this update. We’re in the slow-grind phase now, trying to get as much exterior work completed as possible before the cold weather shuts us down. I’m looking forward to getting back to the Parlor’s interior renovation, but that is still several weeks away. For now, the outside work has to come first
