Milton Blows its Lid: Roof Hatch takes Flight

Milton Blows its Lid: Roof Hatch takes Flight

There are times when I feel a bit like Tom Hanks’s character in the movie “The Money Pit,” and last Friday was no exception as severe storms rolled through our area.

Ole Milton has a Mansard-style roof with a large flat section on top. This design gives us plenty of attic space, accessible via a makeshift staircase and a rooftop hatch. Unfortunately, the hatch wasn’t up for the kind of winds we faced Friday evening. So, in the midst of the storm, I found myself crawling out a second-story window onto the side porch roof to retrieve Milton’s lid. And after a bit of a struggle with the wind, rain, and lightning, I managed to drag the hatch cover through the house, back into the attic, and secure it in place. I improvised a tiedown using a couple of eyelets and some spare Romex wire we had lying around; I’m hoping it’ll stay put until I can build a new, improved version.

Just another story to add to our growing collection.

Note to self: add an interior pic of the attic
