Demo Days Ahead: Exciting Times for Our Project

Finally, it feels like we’re making progress.

  • Gutters – check
  • Water softener – check
  • Outbuilding demo scheduled – check

Hey we’ll take the wins… the gutters are critical to control water around the house and protect the foundation. The water softener is also critical – Sheri and I haven’t been without a water softener since the early ’90s. Trust me, it’s critical for our sanity. And the big one, demo days are coming!!!

The demo of the current shed and what’s left of the summer kitchen will be underway within a few weeks. That seems like a relatively small task, but numerous decisions on the replacement building had to come first: what we wanted, what we could afford, who would build it, style, features, size, placement, utilities, and more. And it’s not just the demo of the buildings but includes taking down several large trees, stumps, grading, rock, trenching for utilities, etc. The concrete flatwork will begin once the demo is completed, so we’re excited. While we may have to hold off a bit on the building construction until our other home sells, hopefully, that’ll happen soon, and we’ll be underway.

For the building, we went with a 30 x 60 with a 10 x 60 lean-to on the left side. The front has two 10 x 10 garage doors, windows running down both sides, and a couple of doors close to the house. So, it’s a fairly good-sized building for parking the cars, storing materials for the house, and having a general outdoor hangout—think fire pit and BBQ. Back out the cars, and you have a pretty good place for playing whatever. The photo is just a rough depiction, it’s not an actual representation of what we’re building, but provides a rough idea for now.

We’re pretty excited for the progress…
