Washed Out: When Rain Derails a Build

Washed Out: When Rain Derails a Build

Sometimes words just can’t capture the rollercoaster of building something new. Just a couple of weeks ago, it finally felt like we were gaining traction on the garage project: foundation poured, plumbing completed, and the concrete slab scheduled within the next week or so. We were so close to putting up walls.

And then nature happened.

Over the weekend, torrential rain hit—so hard that by Monday morning, all the carefully installed plumbing had floated, displaced by as much as six inches in places. The entire plumbing job needs to be dug up and redone. That means more time, more cost, and lost momentum.

But despite all the frustration, one must focus on the silver lining. I’m incredibly grateful the concrete crew noticed something off before proceeding. They took the time to double-check, brought it to my attention, and wisely recommended getting the plumber back before pouring the slab. If they hadn’t caught the issue and we’d poured the concrete, the consequences would have been a nightmare.

So, next week, we try again—plumbing take two! With any luck, the weather (and everything else) will cooperate, with the slab pour not far behind. One way or another, we’ll get there – I’m nearly sure of it…
