Phase 1 Complete (almost): Grateful and Ready for What’s Next

Phase 1 Complete (almost): Grateful and Ready for What’s Next

Hard to believe it’s been a month since my last post… let’s see… So, we both got COVID back in October. Only my second time, but for whatever reason, I’m not one of the lucky ones; it always hits me pretty hard. Needless to say, I haven’t felt much like posting even though there’s been a lot of progress.

The garage is nearly complete now; a few odds and ends remain. We need a couple of pieces of tin installed, along with the gutters. Most of the electrical work for the garage and house has been completed. Insulation is done, drywall for the bathroom is in progress, rough plumbing is done, and a new roof is on the house. The place has been a zoo lately, but we’re grateful to have made so much progress. The only outstanding item is completing the HVAC installation, scheduled for early December. Oh, and we’ll have to do some grading work – maybe we’ll save that for spring?

With a bit of luck, this weekend we’ll move the rest of our stuff that’s been in storage in JC since March; we’re finally starting to see the light at the end of this phase 1 effort. It’s been about a year since we kicked off this journey, and it’s been a mixture of: we’re so fortunate to be stewards of the amazing place, and oh my God, what have we done.

Phase 2: the house… well, in October, we spent half a day with a couple of structural engineers, they crawled all over and under the house. We have their report, which primarily documents what we already knew. In early December, we’ll meet with them to discuss options and next steps to ensure this old farmhouse survives another 140 years or more.
