Another month has zipped by, and while it sometimes feels like we’re spinning our wheels, there’s actually been plenty happening behind the scenes.
After a long stretch of living with a couch and a guest bedroom set, we finally moved all our belongings out of the old house in JC. There’s something satisfying about settling into your own furniture again—especially being able to sleep in our own bed after months away. The last box is moved, the doors locked, and we’re officially done with the JC house. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to a place we poured so much effort into, but it’s time to embrace new adventures.
Of course, the new house continues with its own surprises. The mice saga continues, but Jasper has proven himself a champion mouser. I keep hoping Eeyore (aka Mazda – the other cat) will catch on, but so far, she’s more interested in napping than pest control. That left me crawling under the house, hunting for gaps and sealing up yet another hidden entryway—this time deep inside a pocket door, only accessible from the crawlspace.
Sunday night’s rainstorm a few weeks ago brought a new twist: water dripping onto the foot of our bed. I couldn’t help but laugh—maybe I’m channeling Tom Hanks in “The Money Pit” at this point. We’ve had several roofers assess the damage, and while it’s frustrating to discover so many shortcuts from the previous renovation, it’s also a chance to make things right. I don’t know what decisions led to the work that was done in the 2018 renovation, but I can say with certainty that those contractors won’t be getting a second chance from me.
As for the garage, progress has stalled—just a couple of electrical quotes so far. Here’s hoping for a stretch of dry weather so we can finally break ground and get this build moving forward.
Stay tuned—there’s never a dull moment in the world of old house adventures
